We are delighted to announce our Volunteer of the Month for September, Chris Massey!
Chris Massey has been an impactful volunteer for the Detroit Spartans for almost a decade. His steadfast dedication, positive perspective, desire to impact the community, and enthusiasm for youth sports have influenced student-athletes of the Detroit Spartans and their families.
Chris Massey currently serves as the athletic director for the Detroit Spartans and has a plethora of coaching experience. His passion for making the world a better place through his selflessness extends beyond showing up for his children, Chrishaun and Christiyani Massey of the Detroit Spartans.
“One thing about me, it is strictly about the kids. One of the things that I think everyone likes about me is that I not only deal with football, I deal with cheer, too. I make sure everybody knows me so if a parent is late, that girl or boy can come up to me and say, hey, coach Chris, can I use your phone to call my mom or dad?” shared Chris Massey.
Volunteers make a huge difference in the lives of youth. Their support, encouragement, and guidance help to shape character, confidence, and the way that they view society.
Coach Chris understands the power and influence volunteers like himself have on the community. He believes in filling in the gaps for those in need of additional support and has high expectations regarding the impact youth sports will have on metro Detroit’s student-athletes. “My overall goal is for the kids to become positive people.”
“One of the reasons I’m so dedicated is because of the neighborhood. It’s a growing neighborhood, and it’s rough, but I’m familiar with it, and I know everyone over there. I love it.”
The Detroit Spartans home field is located at Northwestern High School. The close-knit organization has been in existence since 2014.
“The Spartans have become my family. Griff and Posey (the Spartans President and VP) treat me like a brother because I am the only child and I don’t look for anything in return. I’m willing to give everyone a hand, even other orgs. If you need help or pointers, call me; everybody knows that around the league.”
We want to thank Chris Massey for his constant commitment to positively influencing the lives of everyone he can. His devotion to the student-athletes, the community, and those in need is a motivating factor for all of us.
