DETROIT, MI — Sound Mind Sound Body Foundation (SMSB) is proud to announce that its U.S. Department of Education TRIO Talent Search Program has secured a second consecutive term of federal funding, totaling $1.5 million over the next five years. The renewed funding will allow SMSB to continue providing college-readiness, mentoring, and postsecondary support to 500 students at Harper Woods High School, Denby High School, East English Village Preparatory Academy, and Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School.
SMSB is especially proud to serve as the only community-based organization (CBO) in Michigan operating a TRIO program, providing students with access to federally supported college-readiness resources through a community-centered approach.
The renewed investment builds upon SMSB’s strong record of helping students successfully navigate the path from high school to higher education. Graduating seniors participating in SMSB’s Talent Search program have achieved significant postsecondary and scholarship outcomes, including:
- 100% college acceptance
- 100% receiving partial academic scholarships
- 70% receiving athletic scholarships
- 40% receiving full-ride scholarships
Through Talent Search, each student participates in a minimum of two individualized mentoring meetings per month, providing consistent support in academic planning, social-emotional development, and goal setting. Students also receive SAT preparation and practice testing, college and financial aid advising, and college tours designed to strengthen their preparation for postsecondary education.
SMSB places a strong emphasis on ensuring graduating seniors have multiple opportunities available to them after high school. Every senior participating in the Talent Search program is required to apply to at least 10 colleges of their choice, helping students expand their options for college admission, scholarships, and financial aid.
