Detroit, MI – Sound Mind Sound Body Foundation (SMSB) is proud to announce it has been selected as one of only 14 organizations nationwide to receive a grant from the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and the Foot Locker Foundation Community Empowerment Program. This prestigious award is part of a $1.2 million investment to support youth programming in 11 cities, reaching more than 10,000 young people in low-income communities across the country.
The grant will support the development of new basketball courts at SMSB’s 50,000-square-foot community center-the largest of its kind in Detroit. These courts will complement SMSB’s comprehensive programming, which provides academic instruction, skill development, nutrition support, and counseling services for Detroit youth. By enhancing athletic and educational opportunities, SMSB aims to foster holistic growth and open pathways to college and career success for local students.
“We are honored to be recognized by LISC and the Foot Locker Foundation,” said Curtis Blackwell II, President and Co-Founder of SMSB. “This investment will help us expand our impact and ensure Detroit’s youth have access to the resources and support they need to thrive.”
Now in its fourth year, the Foot Locker Foundation Community Empowerment Program has deployed nearly $5.2 million to build the capacity of grassroots nonprofits and advance opportunities for youth in underserved communities. This year’s grants, ranging from $60,000 to $100,000, are designed to meet the unique needs of each community and strengthen the social infrastructure supporting young people.
